A year ago I had the chance to interview Rhett and Link. If you've never heard of them you can thank me later. They're quite possibly some of the most creative and funny guys you'll find online. They're very popular too. Their YouTube videos have over 44 million views combined. They're so good, in fact, that they're making a living off their talents and I rarely do a presentation to any group of people without showing one of their videos.
Beyond their creative editing, catchy songs, and funny concepts, they're smart business guys who understand the online culture very well. They've figured out how to create a regular content that people will pay attention to. Sometimes they get paid for it. Sometimes they don't, but ultimately they're creating content regularly just like any blogger or podcaster might do. These guys just happen to do it with video.
This interview is a little over sixteen minutes long, but I think it's worth understanding their approach to creating good online video (and good content in general.) They specifically address the difference between viral videos and well done videos that gain a large viewership. It's a good distinction and one worth noting as a marketer.
The bottom line is that it doesn't matter whether you ever make an online video or not, there's a lot to gain from listening to Rhett and Link for anything you may do in social media. Enjoy the interview.
