Really Bad Twitter Practice: Retweeting Compliments

I've noticed an unfortunate trend among some people on Twitter. They retweet compliments, as in someone Tweets something nice about them and they in turn RT (retweet) that person's original complimentary tweet.

It looks like this:

First, Joe_Niceguy tweets:
@Bill_Needslove sure did a great job on that project for us. He's the man!

Then a few minutes later Bill_Needslove tweets:
RT @Joe_Niceguy: @Bill_Needslove sure did a great job on that project for us. He's the man!

Who thinks this is a good idea?

We don't do this offline. It's not as if you meet someone in the store and the first thing you say is, "Joe says my company is awesome. He thinks we're a great value and have first rate customer service." You wouldn't do that face-to-face, so why would you do it on Twitter? That just doesn't make sense.

If someone says something nice about you on Twitter just thank them and trust that people will see it. When you RT of a compliment undermines the sentiment entirely. Just say thanks and move along.

I don't think I've seen this done yet nor would I do it myself. However, how would you differentiate it from testimonials on your website? If Twitter is an outpost of your main online identity, presumably your site, then isn't there a similarity? I agree with you in that it seems like bad form to use Twitter in that fashion. Although, I'm not so sure that if I saw a big company do it, I would think too much about it. Perhaps it's the difference in dynamic. Do I actually know this person RT the compliment or is it less of a personal relationship? Just a thought.

Thanks for the comment Joey. I considered how/if this is different from testimonials on a website before I posted. I concluded that it is different because a testimonial page on a website isn't a conversation tool. It's a static, unobtrusive page that is there only for someone who's interested. Not everyone who visits the site will be interested so it's just there if they care. It's a passive promotion. The thing about Twitter is that it's active. It's active conversation, active promotion, active everything. So to do this on Twitter is to then be actively telling people that you got some kudos. That's cute when a kid does it, but a bit telling when a business professional does it. I think it's just wiser to be thankful and keep doing whatever it was you did to deserve the compliment.

Sean, thanks for the comment. Yes, I actually have seen that as well...the tweeter retweets a retweet of their own tweet. I think if someone wants to thank the person they can just reply with a tweet that says thanks. That way if someone really wants to see what the thanks is for, they can check it out.

It kind of reminds me of the Jim Rome Show (on the radio). After every interview he does, he reads countless emails on air from listeners saying, "Great interview, Jim!" In the case of Twitter, I don't think the intent of retweeting compliments is always to act as a testimonial but to do a favor for the person paying the compliment. When the compliment is retweeted, he/she is also exposing the person who made to compliment to all of his/her followers. The result could be an increase in followers for that person. Even if the practice is well intentioned, it gets on my nerves too. I have seen a few cases where the tweeter retweets a retweet of their own original tweet (if you can follow all of that!). Very annoying!!
