Don't Even Think of Using Social Media Without Transparency

Posted on 01/22/2009

transparent_desktopIn the latest episode of The New Mediology, Nathan and I discussed the need to understand transparency in social media. Two weeks ago I talked about the right mindset needed to use social media well. Though I didn't focus on transparency in that post, it is also very important to social media success and one that can be easily overlooked.

The fact of the matter is that people's expectations have changed. They welcome candid communication now more than ever and social media tools are proving to be the best platform available for this.

You can listen to the podcast online (in just under 20 minutes) or download it in iTunes.

Thanks Josh. I love where you're going with personal branding. Social media, when used well, creates some of the best personal branding opportunities that have ever been available to people. Take it from me...I'm a direct result of it.

Great post and great podcast. You hit the nail on the head. Hiding behind a brand or "corporate-speak" doesn't work any more. People expect and demand more. They place value on understanding and knowing with whom they are working. I think that more emphasis needs to be placed on personal blogs (particularly in the world of Facebook/MySpace/Twitter) because the lines are blurred between someone's personal and business lives. They are quickly becoming the same thing -- brand You.
