Is Twitter a Social Networking or a Social Media Platform? Yes.

Posted on 07/21/2008

A few weeks ago I had heated debate friendly discussion with Nathan about whether Twitter is a social network or a social media platform. You can hear the discussion here. He said it's a social network. I said it's social media. As I have thought more about it since then I think we were both wrong. Twitter is both.

It would be limiting to Twitter to say it is JUST one or the other because it has so many aspects that are distinct to social media and social networking alike. For instance, social media is about user generated content, conversation, and sharing information. Twitter does that. Social networking, however is about connecting people together through shared interests, interacting, and facilitating relationships. Twitter does that too. What I have realized is that Twitter as a tool/platform is distinct in that it covers both the social media and social networking.

I think Nathan and I were debating the wrong question. The better question is this: Do you use Twitter as just a social network or social media or do you use (and utilize) it as both simultaneously? The basis for my original perspective of Twitter as a social medium was because I only used it as a social medium. I hadn't really been looking at it for social networking opportunities. Likewise, I suspect Nathan was using Twitter more from a social networking side and not as much for the social media opportunities.

So now the challenge is this: if we find ourselves on one side or the other, how do we incorporate the other side into our Twitter use? For me, I know I can use it better to interact with people who I don't know (or don't know well.) That's not something I've done much, but I think I'm going to start...after all, that's part of the social network aspect of Twitter that I've been missing out on.

Bonus Twitter related info: USA Today wrote an article about Twitter. Plan on some extra downtime over the next few days as more people (who hadn't heard of Twitter until now) join and give it a shot.

Ah - Agreed. Twitter is a social platform, but can be used in a variety of ways.

I definitely agree that Twitter is both. I've found it surprisingly useful to pick up tidbits of info from people with similar interests, and I use it as a 'scratch pad' to store thoughts (especially on the move). The conversational aspects of Twitter are of course limited but still useful. The Social Media types are very active on Twitter and I find it great for Social Networking in that circle.

Nathan: Finally we agree!!! Steve: Thanks for the comment. I've never used Twitter for the scratch pad purpose you mentioned (I tend to use Jott.com for that type of thing) but I can see how Twitter would work too.

I agree, I think it's both. But if I had to call it one or the other it would be Social Media.

Ok, I read the article, and I still don't care that you are drinking milk for breakfast. All kidding aside, I can see some of value, but it seems like we are getting bombarded with things that we have to do to keep up. It will be a sad day when you have to hire someone to tweet for you.

Twitter is generally a waste of time but is fun to play with. It should be called "stalker", because it benefits those people who have nothing else better to do but follow me around

Schmoozii: Thanks for the comment. Jeff: I think the people who really have adopted Twitter and see the benefit of it are people who don't see it as just another thing to put on their full plates, rather they see it as something they want to do to that has value. And yes, it would be a sad day to hire someone to tweet for you...and I don't think it would ever work. Moguling: I couldn't disagree with you more. I used to think it was a waste of time but I've seen significant value in the information I have received from various tweets and links. I've learned about breaking news, valuable statistics, and new websites through Twitter. Likewise I've connected with people to some degree with Twitter and learned more about people I'm interested in. It's not been a waste of my time at all. I find it to be a valuable use of my time.

I see Twitter as a platform since it can really be whatever you need it to be. I only choose to follow people who deliver interesting tidbits of information and try to provide the same. I don't really use it for networking, but I see others doing that part of it quite effectively.

Thanks Josh. Twitter is turning out to be quite a platform to be able to do so much. Guess that's why it crashes all the time. :)
